1. Familiarizing with Empirical Research Articles – Individual Work (20%): The purpose of this assignment is to assist students in becoming a critical consumer of social work research. This assignment also aims to help students learn the format of research articles, not the subject of the articles (such as research findings or research topic itself). By learning the format of research articles, students should get better ideas of research articles/papers. Students will identify 3 empirical research articles: one quantitative, one qualitative, and one review (either systematic or meta-analysis) article. Again, any topic is allowed. Since this paper will help students to learn the different types of empirical research, students will focus on methodology (method) and results (findings) sections of each article and comparing them. Do not pay attention to the stories of the article, but focus on how the article delivered the stories, format/frame of research papers. For example, do not discuss like “the authors found mental health negatively affected academic achievement of foster care children,” but discuss the details of research process and the manner of their report. Students are expected to write no less than 1.5 and no more than 3 pages in length.
