A requirement for this course is that you give an 8-10 minute presentation on a statistical topic. Using Google, or any search engine, find an article relevant to your major (or proposed major or area of interest) that presents the results from either a comparison of two (or more) ways of doing something or a survey. For example, if you are a criminal justice major you might choose a comparison of two drug treatment programs or a survey of recently released individuals reporting on their first year out of prison. The article must clearly state who did the study and who were the participants.
Send me a PDF of the article or a link at least two weeks before your presentation. (10 points)
Your presentation will be graded based on your answering the following six questions:
1. What is the hypothesis being tested or
What is the purpose of the survey? (10 points)
2. How was the study done: what population was used, how were they chosen, etc.? (15 points)
3. What are the results? (10 points). Highlight 2-3 important results.
4. What did the study do well? or
Why do you think it is a good study? (20 points)
5. What did the study do poorly?
What did the authors do to make you question the results? (20 points)
6. What are you going to do as a result of reading this study and why? (15 points)
Your presentation should be about 8-10 minutes and allow for 2 minutes of questions from the class and up to 5 minutes of questions from me.
In addressing each question be specific and use what we have discussed in class about study design and statistical testing (particularly Chapter 1.4). You can use PowerPoint or any other way to share the data with the class.
