Close Analysis Essay Instructions:
A literary analysis must be based on your personal perspective, interpretation, judgment,
or critical evaluation of the work. This is accomplished by examining the literary devices,
word choices, or writing structures the author uses within the work.
Requirements:
Open topic: For example, choose a poem, play, story, literary figure, or movement
from Renaissance to contemporary times
The topic chosen could be related to today’s society (optional). For example, war,

Minimum 1500 words
3 sources of reference (The topic chosen is your primary source. You would need
two more sources) Make sure to use in-text citations and credit the sources used for
reference. For example, According to… Hemingway argues that… Spencer
affirms… etc. Add page number if any when using parenthetical citations. That is,
crediting the source in paranthesis
Use third-person point of view used throughout the entire essay. That is, avoid “I
believe,” “In my opinion,” I think,” etc.
Use present tense to discuss the work and past tense to describe the author’s
background. For example: “Martha opens the door smiling as he walks in.” instead
of “Martha opened the door smiling as he walked in.”
Other Requirements:
Essays will be written in MLA style, typed double-spaced in Times New Roman 12-pt font with
only black ink.
Essays must also be properly formatted, paginated, and include a proper Works Cited page to
receive full credit
