Rationale: Up to this point in the semester, we have explored several theoretical question concerning
topic and themes in both the novel and short story stories.
Directions: For this paper, you will write 1000-1250 words analysis of one or several of the readings we
covered up to this point in the semester. Your analysis can take different approaches. For example, it can
analyze the ways one or several readings for their use literary devices that you find most interesting, it
can discuss the message of the reading(s) and the literary devices used to advance the message or it
explore character development or take a thematic approach of one or several of the novels, authors, etc.
For example, if you are interested in the literary device of irony regarding the ways it helps you think
through several of the stories that use it as literary device such as, “On Being Crazy,” and “God Bless
America.” You might want to write a paper that argues how the use of irony in the stories highlight the
contradictions in idea of American Democracy .
