Final Research Paper Instructions: Constitutional Law-Government Powers
Introduction
Your task is to write a research paper, which means you will have the chance to delve deeper into a topic that interests you. This will require you to conduct research in the library and its databases, but you might want to start looking for sources in your textbook. Your paper should present either a research question you are attempting to answer, or thesis statement. The paper should not simply be descriptive, but grounded in the work of other scholars, and guided by their findings and/or arguments. You must select one of the topics and/or case(s) we studied in the course and go into more depth than we did. To that end, make sure your topic is not overly broad. So, for example, don’t write a paper that just summarizes the history of the Court’s interpretation of the Commerce Clause over a long expanse of time–examine a case, or small set of cases, instead. Injecting reasoned opinions in your arguments/points is fine. That is what most authors of law review articles do.
Mechanics & Style
-Your paper should be at least 2000 words in length, double spaced.
-It must be of Times New Roman 12 Font—the same font as this handout -Margins should be 1” top and bottom, and 1 1⁄4 ” on the sides
-Use a minimum of 8 sources (books and/or journal articles other than your textbooks); Do not use dictionaries, encyclopedias, random websites, etc. as sources. Consult journal articles, law review articles and books for your main sources. A good place to start is with the sources on your topic of interest listed in your textbook. JSTOR and Westlaw are good databases to consult. You may use a few reputable news outlets as sources, but do so sparingly, for examples, evidence, etc. Carefully cite information you take from your sources. Remember that it is not only direct quotes that must be cited—you must also cite a source if you take information from it, even if you just paraphrase it.
-All papers should include a References section and employ the APA method of citation or Harvard Blue Book Uniform System of Citation–either is fine.
-Plagiarism: The paper is expected to be your own work. Plagiarism is the act of stealing the ideas and/or the actual words of others and using them as your own. Please be very careful about citing others in your papers. The penalties for plagiarism are very severe. See me if you have any questions on appropriate citation or what constitutes plagiarism.
