For this discussion, read the course materials and resources listed in this module with a focus on the impact of altered images in art photography and photojournalism. As we saw in Chapter 9: Art and Power in our open textbook, the evolution of photography offered new opportunities to document reality but questions have always been raised about whether or not photographs are ever truly objective.
In today’s digital environment, photographs have been intentionally altered to manipulate the meaning of the image and to change perceptions of reality. We saw examples of altered photographs in the the New York Times article “When Photos Lie” and the conversation with Michael Aarchambault: Interview: Michael Kamber on Photojournalism Ethics and the Altering of Images. Kamber talks about the exhibition he curated at the Bronx Documentary Center Altered Images: 150 Years of Posed and Manipulated Documentary Photography.
Based on your examination of these course materials, address the following questions in your initial posting and then respond to two classmates (make sure that your response refers to and cites at least one of the articles and not just the images):
After reviewing the specific examples of altered photographs, select one in particular that you find most compelling or interesting (make sure it is different from previous images you may have analyzed in an earlier module).
Why did you select this image and what specific ethical concern does the manipulation of this image raise?
Based on your examination of this particular image and this topic, what are the dangers of photographic manipulation?
How are concerns about altered images similar and/or different in the world of art compared to photojournalism?
How do we resolve these kind of ethical concerns in photographic manipulation?

Discussion Grading and General Guidelines
Write your initial response in the Discussion with a 200-word minimum, and respond to two other postings from your classmates at 150 words each. Your initial post and response to peers should be a continuation of the initial topic. Read the entire thread so that you are aware of what your classmates are saying in the conversation. Use the discussion as an opportunity to ask questions in an informed way, offer comparisons, and engage with your peers in an academic dialogue. Do not just summarize the readings. Assert a perspective in your own voice and support with research.
Use quotation marks for any direct quote but do not quote more than one or two sentences from the readings. We really want to hear your voice! Use an appropriate citation style (MLA, APA or Chicago) to cite references, websites, or anything you comment on that someone else said. Be sure to provide a working link if you are referencing something that isn’t listed in the course.
Please review the Discussion Evaluation Rubric before posting your response. I look forward to seeing you in the conversation!
