Functional Area: *ACADEMIC ADVISING*
Academic advisors work with students to plan a course of study, achieve their
goals, and promote their development. They play a key role in promoting
student success, persistence, and retention; these are important individual,
institutional, and societal outcomes. Academic advisors also work closely with
faculty members and academic programs and may specialize in advising specific
groups such as athletes, honors students, and students in STEM majors.
Advising is often housed in academic affairs and may be coordinated centrally
or be decentralized into individual colleges within a university. The National
Academic Advising Association publishes the NACADA Journal.*
You will submit a two-page (minimum), single-spaced document of the key points related to the functional area. Your paper should not just contain bullet points; incorporate your thoughts on what you’ve found as much as possible. These points should be derived from readings in the text or articles and professional literature and can include but should not be limited to key historical events, evolution of the functional area, principles of good practice, the name and web address of professional associations for that area, a description of competencies and roles for practitioners in the functional area, and/or current challenges. Talking with a practitioner in that particular functional area is highly encouraged, as it may enhance your understanding of current trends and issues. In addition, you will also share (via the Discussion Board) with your colleagues one article on your functional area published in the past five years (2018 – present).
