Hemingway essay assignment–15 points
4 pp; double-spaced; 1 inch margins
In both of Hemingway’s short stories, “Cat in the Rain” and “Hills Like White Elephants,” Hemingway presents us with a narrator who does not evaluate the characters for us: the narrator never tells us whether someone is essentially good or bad, right or wrong, selfish or generous, etc. Mostly, the narrator provides us with dialogue and descriptions so that we can “see” and “hear” what is happening. We do not even get much background or history on the characters. This means it is mostly left to us, the readers, to figure out. But, this does not mean that Hemingway has not in some ways “stacked the deck” to influence our understanding. (After all, he is the one determining the dialogue, descriptions, and everything else.)
What moral or psychological complexity of character and/or relationship do you see emerging from a careful and close reading of these short stories?
Some possibilities for your focus may include:
–the relationship between the man and the woman in each story (What do you think each story suggests about what is wrong with the relationship? Why? What textual evidence can you offer to support your interpretation?)
OR
–the unspoken in each story (What do you think each story suggests the characters are really implying in what they say—as opposed to what they actually say? Why? What textual evidence can you offer to support your interpretation?)
OR
–the character of the man (or the woman) in each story (What do you think the stories reveal about their characters as human beings? Why? What textual evidence can you offer to support your interpretation?)
NOTE: No outside sources are acceptable for this essay. The analysis, interpretation, and writing for this essay are to be entirely your own.
Be sure to focus on a specific reading—your interpretation—of the stories. Be sure to examine specific moments in the stories and use textual evidence (direct quotations and paraphrase) to support your view and claims. Remember, to support any claim you make, provide both textual support and your own explanation: You have to explain how and why the textual evidence you offer supports whatever you claim about it.
