Topic: Focus on Hamlet’s actions – specifically in relation to what we know about Claudius, the Ghost, and Hamlet, Sr. What do you think Shakespeare is trying to teach his audience regarding politics via Hamlet’s behavior?
This is what I’ve already written so far:
Shakespeare’s Hamlet is a play that deals with many different themes. One of the most prominent themes in the play is politics. The question of whether or to what degree one should be involved in politics, and how to properly conduct oneself when dealing with political matters, are central to Hamlet. In this essay I am going to focus on one specific aspect of Hamlet’s behavior that relates specifically to his actions in relation to what we know about Claudius, the ghost, and Hamlet, Sr., as well as how these actions relate to the theme of politics. Hamlet’s behavior in relation to the ghost of his father is a perfect example of how Hamlet’s actions are related to the theme of politics. The first time Hamlet sees the ghost he is very nervous and scared, which shows that Hamlet is not acting like himself when dealing with political matters. When Hamlet sees the ghost, he says “O my dear father! My mother! O my soul, my soul!” (Shakespeare 1). This shows that Hamlet was not able to control his emotions when seeing his father Hamlet’s behavior in relation to the ghost of his father is also related to the theme of politics because it shows that Hamlet was not able to control his emotions when seeing his father. This is a very common trait among people who are involved in politics, and it can cause problems if you cannot control your emotions when dealing with political matters. Hamlet’s actions are the most important part of the play because they show what kind of person he is and how he will act in the future. In Act 1, Scene 5, Hamlet says “To be, or not to be that is the question” (Shakespeare). This quote shows that Hamlet has made up his mind about whether he wants to live, and it also shows that he has a strong personality. The quote also shows that Hamlet thinks very highly of himself and does not think anyone else should have any respect for themselves. He believes that everyone should just do whatever they want without thinking about anyone else.
Hamlet’s actions in the play are meant to teach the audience about politics. The first thing that Shakespeare wants his audience to understand is that power corrupts. Hamlet’s father, Claudius, has all of the power and he uses it for evil purposes. He murders King Hamlet and then marries his widow, Ophelia, to take over as king of Denmark. This is a very bad example of how one should not use their power because it will only cause destruction and pain for others. Another thing that Shakespeare wants his audience to understand is that revenge can be a bad idea too. Revenge is what drives many characters in the play such as Ophelia who tries desperately to get revenge on her husband by sleeping with his best friend and then marrying him after he murdered her husband (Hamlet). In my opinion, I believe this was a very bad idea because she could have never gotten revenge on him if she had just waited until he was gone from her life instead of trying so hard to get back at him by sleeping with another man behind his back (Claudius). She would have been much happier if she had just forgiven him like Hamlet did when they were still together instead of trying so hard to hurt him by sleeping with another man behind his back (Claudius). Secondly, I think Shakespeare wants us to understand that appearances can be deceiving which applies perfectly here between Ophelia and Claudius since they both thought they were in love but really weren’t at all (Ophelia) or actually did love each other but things got twisted around when Claudius started using her emotions against her (Claudius). Lastly, I think Shakespeare also wants us to understand that people can change for the better even if it takes them some time or even if it’s too late like it was with Hamlet who finally realized what an awful person he had become after seeing what kind of person his father turned out being after being murdered by him (Hamlet’s death), Ophelia who finally realized how wrong she was for cheating on her true love like Claudius was after seeing how much pain he put into everyone including himself when he found out about their affair(Ophelia), The Ghost who finally realized what an awful person/king he used to be before dying like Hamlets son turned out being after realizing how badly things went down during his reign/life(The Ghost), And lastly Gertrude who finally realized why everyone hated her son before passing away which shows us we should always try our hardest no matter what no matter how long it takes or even if it’s too late because you never know when your chance might come around again or even better yet you might find someone new whom you truly fall in love with again instead!
