I want the fist part of the assignment to be submitted by sunday 19th feb. (1 page will be good enough)
I will then tell you how the 2nd half should be done and that will be due on sunday 26th Feb.
The idea of this assignment is that you start thinking about it now, next week you’ll learn about plant growth forms and I’d like you to deliver this assignment then. The fact that it covers two weeks should give you an indication of the scale and effort required.
I want you to start to do a survey of how plant growth forms:
trees,
shrubs,
perennials,
climbers/vines
annuals
are used in designed landscapes. You will learn more about the definitions of these terms next week, but I would like you to start gathering images now. I would like to look online, and at books: be adventurous to find examples of landscaping projects that use plants in creative ways. Don’t forget private and public gardens too – these are often far more adventurous. I want you to find as many different ways that plants are used in designed landscapes as possible, both for their functionality and for decoration and ornament. As part of this I want you to consider how plants might be shaped by pruning or cutting in order to fulfill various functions. As you learn more about how plants grow over the next few weeks, you will be able to relate what you see to what you will find out about how plants grow.
I also want you to observe and take photographs of places you visit. This might include the shrubs planted outside the shopping mall, street trees, or other everyday places. Private front gardens can be very interesting too (but be discrete about how you photograph these!).
Next week I will tell you how I want you to submit
And then, for those of you in Boston, there is the wonderful Arnold Arboretum. While visiting the Arboretum is not required for this assignment, it is a fantastic live resource available within the Boston area. This is one of the world’s finest collections of trees, and a certain amount of shrubs and other plants too. You may get there on the MBTA Orange Line. https://www.arboretum.harvard.edu/visit/directions/
There are a number of self-guided tours which might be good to do if you have an opportunity to visit:

If you are not in Boston find out about your nearest botanic garden and maybe visit?
