In a post that went viral a few years ago, an article claimed that Mcdonald’s hamburgers DO NOT DECOMPOSE (implied that all the additives and preservatives made it unbreakable… well, un-break-down-able, at least)! They claimed that if you left a Big Mac on your shelf for years, it would remain exactly as it was the day you bought it. A LOT of people blindly re-posted/retweeted/shared this article until it went viral, freaking a lot of people out. And would you believe that majority of the people simply just shared it after ONLY reading the headline? It’s true! There was even another article written about how this was not and could not be true, and the first line of that article went something like this: “I can’t believe we had to write this article but…”. The truth is, any food (even the most “organic” thing at Whole Foods can be preserved, but only if there is no oxygen or moisture to break it down (vacuum sealed perfectly).
Understanding how to assess the credibility of the information you come across in your study and research is essential. More information is at our fingertips than ever before, and the amount of information makes it even harder to determine which information can be trusted. As the terms ‘post truth’, ‘fake news’, and ‘alternative facts’ become increasingly prevalent in social discourse and the public sphere it’s essential that we all develop the skills to critically evaluate information ourselves.
For this discussion, based on the video and based on the material from chapters 1 and 2 about sources of information, I would like you to think of memes, headlines, stories, or pieces of information that you knew (or know now based on your new knowledge) were fake or not real, or at least claims made by a source that was not credible. I would like you to give an example, and tell the class either how you knew the source/material was false (or at least unverified/not fact checked), and how you would go about making sure that something you share/post is not spreading false information.
