In this essay, students will examine the role of periodization in cinema, especially as this relates to their writing. Essays should attempt to address the following questions:
Define “periodization” as described in our textbook using proper citation.
Describe “periodization” in your own words.
Choose one of these films Casablanca, Bicycle Thieves, Do the Right Thing, Whiplash, and In the Heat of the Night.
Choose two-three scenes from the film.
Describe each scene, focusing on the details that you feel are the most important.
Analyze these scenes through the lens of periodization. How do the historical events that were happening at the time help explain or enrich the themes of the film?
Students should include specific examples from the text(s) to support their arguments; however, try to avoid using direct quotations whenever possible. Instead, briefly summarize the main points of the examples in your own words (but be sure to include appropriate in-text citations for any/all instances of paraphrasing).
All essays must be formatted according to APA style and utilize twelve-point font, one-inch margins, and double-spacing. Essays should be at least three-to-four pages in length (but no more than five) and must be uploaded via the appropriate Turn-It-In link on Canvas. The Textbook they’re referring to is “The Film Introduction. 6th Edition” and a digital pdf file can be provided.
