Individual students select five personal value ethical dilemmas, research one peer-reviewed, counseling article from the last 15 years linked to each dilemma (you need a total of five articles), identify the associated ACA 2014 Ethical Code that applies to each dilemma and review the steps they need to take to resolve these conflicts. For example for one of your five values, you may be against abortion. Research a counseling, peer-reviewed, article on working with individuals dealing with issues linked to abortion. Reference the article as you talk about the issue and why it may be a challenge for you as a counselor. Perhaps it is against your religious beliefs. Then address what you plan to do to overcome the challenge (i.e. consult with cohorts, seek supervision with someone that has more experience in the area, seek counseling yourself, expand your knowledge base by educating yourself, etc.). Be sure to cite the portion of the ACA 2014 Code of Ethics that applies to each dilemma. In this case, counselors do not impose their values and beliefs on their clients. You would find the section that says that and reference that specific section in your paper. Another example of something that might be problematic is an issue linked to your own life experience. In my case, I have a history of childhood sexual abuse. It was a challenge for me to think of working with abusers. I had to change the way I viewed the client who is an abuser and understand that by helping them I could be helping to stop the abuse. You would follow the same steps listed above: research an article, refer to the article as you talk about the challenge, cite ACA ethical code, address how you will overcome the challenge. I am not asking you to change your beliefs but I am pointing out if you are going to be a counselor there will be times when you need the ability to work with individuals whose belief systems are different than your own.
