Purpose:
The purpose of this speech is articulate your side of an argument in a way that could persuade
an audience to a certain action or belief.
Presenting a solid, concise persuasive argument is a skill that can be used both personally and
professionally for a lifetime.
Task:
1. Select a topic you feel comfortable with. Remember, you are leading the charge for the
issue/topic, so you want to be confident with it.
2. Research your topic well. Credibility is key. You want to make sure you know it from all
angles.
3. Research the opposing side of your argument. Make sur e you understand what the
opposing argument is. Don’t let your own bias for your topic cloud your understanding
of the other side. You’re going to need to be able to understand it well enough to route it
back to your side. A dismissal of an objection to your point of view does not make it go
away, in fact, it makes you seem less knowledgeable and therefore, less credible.
4. Develop your thesis and points that support it. Tie in the opposing argument and route
it back to your argument. Write out, verbatim, your introduction and conclusion.
Remember to use the template provided. This will serve as your speech outline.
5. Construct a 5-6 minute speech from your ideas
