Your Task: Discuss your family history/roots, including your family’s migration history if applicable. If your family’s history is
rooted here in the United States, then discuss your family roots here. Talk to family members to get historical information.
Start by describing your family unit, how many siblings, your place of birth, parents place of birth etc. Then use the points
below to build your essay. You can use the attached youtube vid: Highlights from Finding Your Roots With Henry Louis Gates,
to give you an idea of how to think about your family roots, and perhaps ideas for your essay…..
• When did members of your family come to the United States and why? What were the conditions in the country they migrated from? Try to give details.
• What about internal migration, did your family move around in the United States?
• Did the family migrate together? What branches of the family arrived first etc.
• Where there challenges once in the United States. Again, discuss details.
• How far back on your family tree can you go? Do you know anything about your great grand or great great grand? Names,
country of origin? Anything interesting or surprising. For example, I recently learned my grandfather served in WW2, he was a
part of the men from Central America and Caribbean who went to Europe to assist England in the war effort.
• In general, try to give as many details about your family history/roots as you know or can get. Try to include specific years, or even an interview a fam member if possible.
